      SHIP WRECK EXHIBITION - GALLERY 6  
       
     Brief Intro to the Gallery:
 

 

 A French Oil Company, Total FinaElf, previously known
   

as Elf Petroleum Asia B.V., now knows as TOTAL made the   

    discovery in 1997, where remains of an unidentified
    shipwreck loaded with valuable stoneware and porcelains   
    were  found under 63 meters of water.
     Brunei Government was contacted in 1998 where
     excavation works began with the aid of the French 
    Government Archeological  exhibition  headed by    
    Mr Michel L'Hour, a  well known underwater archeologist.
     Approximately 15,000 artifacts from late 15th and early    
    16th century porcelains, earthenware, gongs, cannon and
    ivory are among those recovered from the wreck, thanks to
    the sponsorship of TOTAL, whose managing director at the
    time was Mr John Perry.
     The first exhibition was held at he lobby of Brunei 
    Museums, sponsored by TOTAL, officially opened
    on 24th April 1999 by the   former Minister of Culture,
    Youth & Sports  Brunei Darussalam.
     International exhibition followed from September 2001 
     until March 2002 on the banks of River Seine, inside a 
    medieval castle of  La  Conciergerie, France. The exhibition
    was  officially opened by His Majesty The Sultan and  
    Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam.
     In 2003, another cultural cooperation began, coincides  
     also with 20th anniversary of diplomatic relationships  
    between Brunei Darussalam and Australia
 

 Discussion between the Government of His Majesty 
     The Sultan and  Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam  
     and Art Exhibition Australia resulted in an exhibition on
    the Sunken Treasure of Brunei Darussalam was officially
     opened on 16th December 2003 until end of  the 2004.
     The venues were the National Maritime Museum, Sydney,     
     the National Museums Canberra and New Maritime
    Museum in Fremantle, Western Australia.
    His Majesty The Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei
    Darussalam visited the exhibition while on tour to
     Australia (19 February 2005)
     
    Today, the new look of the Gallery is thanks to the sponsorship  
   of BHP Billiton, A company involved in the Liquefied Natural
    gas Industry in Australia with Arts Exhibition Australia and
 

 Singapore Airlines.
