LEGISLATION

To implement the policy and objectives of the Brunei Museum the following Acts have been passed.

Preservation of Book Act (18 January 1967, revised 1984)

  • Required publisher (of any government organizations, private sectors and individuals) of every publications published in Brunei shall be deposited to the Director of Brunei Museums in triplicate.

Antiquities and Treasure Trove Act (21 January 1967, revised 1984, 1991 and 2002)

  • Control and preservation of antiquities and archaeological sites.

  • Control export of antiquities by license

  • Violators of this Act are subject to fines and/or imprisonment.

Brunei National Archives Act (2 January 1975, revised 1983)

  • Safekeeping and preservation of public archives and records of Brunei

  • Persons who willfully contravene any provision of this Act are punishable by fine and imprisonment.

 Wildlife Protection Act (19 July 1978, revised 1984)

  • Protected animal species are listed

  • Violators of the Act are subject to fine

  • Museum personnel are empowered to enforce the Act.

 Convention on the International Trade of Endangered Species (CITES) Brunei became a party to CITES on 2 August 1990.

  • The Brunei Museums supports international efforts to protect endangered species through regulation of international trade.

  • The Department is a member of the management Authority in Brunei Darussalam.
